Mount Vernon, Yonkers officials holding public meetings on new urban plans
Officials in Mount Vernon and Yonkers will hold urban planning meetings this week that may result in the rezoning of large swaths of both cities. The rezoning of downtown Yonkers will be a nine- to 12-month process focused on how the city can change its ordinances to attract more development downtown, said Louis Kirven, Yonkers' planning and development commissioner. The 6 p.m. Wednesday event in the Yonkers Public Library's Riverfront branch at 1 Larkin Center is designed to promote public participation at the beginning of the process. "We want the public to weigh in, as well as the different constituencies, to tell us what's important for the downtown we all want to experience and enjoy in the future," Kirven said Monday. Kirven said the city needs to be prepared for new development downtown. The rezoning study could help eliminate the many hurdles and requests for zoning variances that developers and businesses go through when they want to build or operate downtown. Meanwhile, Mount Vernon officials began their public outreach on a new comprehensive plan for the city last year and are holding a series of public meetings at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Parker Elementary School, 461 S. 6th Ave.; 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the A.B. Davis Middle School, 350 Gramatan Ave. and 9 a.m. May 8 at the armory, 144 N. 5th Ave. Officials will present the feedback they collected at last year's meetings in hopes of more public comment. |
