Stalled Yonkers senior housing
project gets needed funding
YONKERS - A stalled senior housing project that was part of the Mulford
Gardens public housing redevelopment is back on track.
Gov. David Paterson and state Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, on
Thursday announced a $1.1 million federal low-income-housing tax credit
for the 49-unit Ashburton Senior Apartments. The new project will be
built on an empty lot across from the former Yonkers General Hospital.
The Yonkers Housing Authority was forced to postpone and redesign its
plans for the four-story Ashburton Senior Apartments last year when it
failed to secure tax credits for the project.
Earlier this year, the housing authority's commissioners were told that
the senior apartments were redesigned to include more one-bedroom units.
The new rental housing will serve low-income senior citizens with rents
expected to be affordable to households with incomes at or below 50
percent of the area median income.
A one-person household would have to earn $36,850 a year or less to
qualify for the new housing.
In addition to the senior housing tax credits, Paterson and
Stewart-Cousins announced a $270,000 grant for the Housing Action
Council to rehabilitate housing and a $175,000 grant for the Family
Service Society of Yonkers to modify homes occupied by people with
physical disabilities. |
