YONKERS — The owners of a downtown office complex want to build a $16 million parking garage near a state historic site.
National RE/sources of Greenwich, Conn., operator of the i-Park office complex off Wells and Warburton avenues, is proposing a two-building garage for 600 cars at 10 Woodworth Ave. Joseph Cotter, the company's president, said his company's proposal is "smart growth."
"We're building on top of existing buildings and parking areas. There are a lot of pluses," Cotter said.
The Planning Board members got their first look at the five-story proposal on Wednesday night, but they took no action.
Cotter said that his company hopes to begin construction by September or October.
Cotter said his company will try to blend the garage with existing historic buildings in the area by using the same color bricks and design features.
The entrance to the proposed garage would be on Warburton Avenue just north of the Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site. Cotter said that the paved entrance to the garage will not disturb the historic site.
City officials and local developers have an interest in seeing the garage built. The Greyston Foundation wants to build an apartment tower across Warburton Avenue from the proposed garage and its parking plan relies on the proposed garage to comply with the city's parking requirements for new development.
The city also wants to begin the daylighting of the Saw Mill River at Larkin Plaza, which would eliminate the large municipal parking lot there.
On Tuesday, the Yonkers Industrial Development Agency adopted an official intent resolution to issue up to $9 million in bonds to finance 300 of the parking spots in the proposed garage.
