Yonkers councilman looks to Facebook for budget savings ideas

February 22, 2010

Yonkers Councilman John Murtagh, R- 5th District, is turning to the social networking Web site Facebook.com to solicit ideas for trimming the city’s budget.

The group is called 100 Ways to Balance Yonkers’ Budget and it’s a bulletin board for posing money-saving ideas for the 2010-11 budget that the council’s Republicans can consider. The 2010-11 budget must be adopted by June 30.

“By leveraging the growing popularity of Facebook,” Murtagh said in his press release, “It occurred to us that we could give taxpayers the ability to have an ongoing dialogue with both Councilmembers and each other throughout the entire budget process.”

Murtagh said that the Facebook page will allow him and his Republican council colleagues to update the public on budget negotiations, hearings and meetings, as well as provide links to on-line documents.
