Yonkers, NY - A celebration of the visual arts, a harvest festival and a Halloween pet parade are some of the special events that the Yonkers Downtown/Waterfront Business Improvement District will present over two weekends, October 18-19 and October 25-26.

The festivities are part of the kick-off of the 400th anniversary of explorer Henry Hudson’s historic sail up the river named after him in the Dutch ship, Halve Maen (Half Moon).

The official Quadracentennial anniversary year is 2009, but Yonkers was designated as the site to launch the observance with a ceremony on October 16 that will be attended by County Executive Andy Spano, Yonkers Mayor Philip Amicone, representatives of the Hudson River Museum, as well as by several other county and city officials and representatives from the towns and villages throughout the Hudson River.

The Yonkers Downtown BID’s festivities will be programmed around the arrival of the Half Moon replica ship that will docked at the Yonkers Pier from October 16 to October 30 which is expected to attract many visitors from throughout Westchester wishing to see the 85-foot schooner.

Steve Sansone, Executive Director of the Yonkers Downtown BID, said: “The Yonkers Downtown Waterfront Business Improvement District is very proud to be the host site for the Half Moon ship to kick off the Quadracentennial Celebration. We are excited to present a number of festive and free events that will complement the enjoyment of the many visitors who will be coming here to see and tour the Half Moon ship.  We are most proud to be working with the Hudson River Museum, The Westchester Arts Council and The City of Yonkers in this exciting venture.”

Highlights of the Yonkers Downtown BID’s Half Moon weekend offerings will be:

Half Moon Visual Arts Day on Sunday, October 19 that will feature a full afternoon of arts programs  including  Evolution Arts, the new monthly offering of free exhibits showcasing the art of local artists that the Yonkers Downtown BID introduced earlier this year. In addition to indoor exhibit sites at 66 Main Street where 66 Main Street/Metro Partners unveils 100 never-before-seen historical photographs of Yonkers and its citizens, and The Lofts at Metro 92 art will be on view outdoors at the Ella Fitzgerald Park near the Metro North train station, accompanied by live and free entertainment.

In addition to Evolution Arts, art lovers will enjoy the All Fired Up exhibit at the Yonkers Library at 1 Larkin Center, a county-wide celebration of art created with clay that the Westchester Arts Council is presenting in October.

Halloween Pet Parade on Sunday, October 26 at 2 PM will provide canines and their significant others the opportunity to celebrate Halloween early and in an unusual way. The dogs are invited to parade attired in Halloween themed costumes. Registration is not required but do lovers are requested to assemble with their pets at the Sculpture Meadow on the Yonkers waterfront address at 12:30 pm. The parade will last about 45 minutes.

In addition to the Halloween Pet Parade, there will be an appropriate seasonal Harvest Festival.

Also in the planning stage are a variety of Children’s Events on Saturday, October 18 and a Performing Arts Day on Saturday, October 25 featuring a number of outdoor live and free music performances.

The Quadracentennial kick-off and two weeks of student tours aboard the Half Moon is being presented through the generosity of Peckham Industries Inc. whose President is John R Peckham.
